DOGO ART 2023
Dogo Onsen
Matsuyama (Japan)
As part of DOGO ART 2023 - an art festival showcasing the works of various artists to energize and add colors to Dogo Onsen, the oldest hot spring in Japan , Emmanuelle has created the symbolic art installation for the festival that set across the stretch of Dogo Shopping Street, which connects to the famous Dogo Onsen Main Building. The installation transformed the Dogo Shopping Street into a colorful and dynamic passage, where people walk under the lifelike 100 colors.
Approaching the entrance of the Dogo Shopping Street, a floating volume of 100 colors appears behind the famous Dogo signage. This floating volume of 3m cube is composed of masking tape made of traditional Japanese paper Washi, which is especially created for Emmanuelle’s unique 100 shades of colors. Each thin line is 15mm wide and perfectly placed next to each other, gently swaying in the wind. The essence of 100 colors is condensed at the entrance, like a gateway to a world of 100 colors to come.
Stepping into the Arcade, the ceiling is covered with floating 100 colors. The installation is composed of 20280 thin lines of masking tapes, formed by repetitive layers of curtain of colors, creating an immersive experience. It is also made of the same masking tape as the entrance floating volume, each thin line is 15mm wide and approximately 2m long. The colorful journey begins with a layer of white, and the color gradually changes layer by layer, forming a total of 101 layers which continues across the stretch of 150m. The colors capture light from the ceiling of the arcade, capture breezes and sway lively in the wind. The installation changes the expression depending on the weather of the day.
Walking under the dynamic 100 colors , the installation gives opportunities for people to enjoy and feel colors with their entire body.
100 colors no.42 / DOGO ART 2023 is part of Emmanuelle’s "100 colors" installation series.
About the "100 colors" series
"100 colors" is an installation series began in 2013, which forms space using 100 shades of colors. Emmanuelle wishes to give emotions through colors as she felt from seeing overflowing "colors" in Tokyo when she first visited in 1995. She also wishes to give opportunities for people to see, touch and feel colors with their senses to become more conscious of colors that exist around them.
In "100 colors", Colors are explored in various forms depending on the environment, to maximize the beauty of colors. 100 colors entering the body with a glance triggers a physical response to engage with the sensation of colors. The installation series will continue to travel around the world.
"When I first arrived in Tokyo,
I was fully fascinated by the colors overflowing on the street.
In that very moment, my mind decided to move to Japan. Overwhelming number of store signs, flying electrical cables, and flashes of blue sky framed by various volumes of buildings, created three dimensional 'layers' in the city.
The flood of various colors pervaded the street built up a complex depth and intensity in the space. These indelible experiences of colors and layers in Tokyo were the inspiration and essence of my design concept of shikiri, which means dividing (creating) space with colors.
Valuing the emotion inspired from Tokyo, in the 10th anniversary year of my studio, I want to show the beauty of colors to the fullest extent.
I also wish to share the feeling of being surrounded by overflowing colors by exhibiting 100 colors, here in the middle of Tokyo.
Please come and find your favorite color. "
